The AGROSUS project took the stage at the 23rd World Congress of Soil Science, held in Nanjing, China, from 7 to 12 June 2026. Researchers Alicia Morugán-Coronado and Raúl Zornoza presented the latest findings from the project’s Mediterranean case study, led by the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT).

During her lecture, Alicia showcased how site-specific agroecological weed management can enhance soil resilience compared to conventional chemical control practices across six European biogeographical regions. The research demonstrates that sustainable weed management approaches deliver region-specific benefits while supporting broader climate adaptation and soil conservation goals.

The presentation highlighted several key outcomes observed across Europe. In the Continental region, agroecological practices were shown to improve drought adaptation. In the Boreal and Steppic regions, they contributed to better soil structure and enhanced carbon stabilization. The Alpine region benefited from more efficient nutrient cycling, while in the Macaronesian region, these approaches helped mitigate soil salinization risks.

These findings provide valuable scientific evidence supporting the transition towards climate-smart agriculture and offer a practical framework for scaling sustainable land management practices across Europe. By demonstrating how agroecological solutions can be tailored to regional environmental conditions, the research contributes directly to the objectives of the European Green Deal and ongoing efforts to strengthen the resilience of agricultural systems in the face of climate change.

The participation of AGROSUS at one of the world’s leading soil science events underscores the project’s commitment to advancing innovative, science-based solutions for sustainable agriculture and healthy soils across Europe.
